What is it?
World Stage Design 2013 is an exhibition of international performance design, from the
World of opera, theatre and dance as well as public performances and performance art installations from non-theatre spaces. It is organized by OISTAT (International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians).
When will it be held?
WSD2013 will take place in Cardiff between September 5th and September 15th 2013. It will
be hosted by the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The event takes place every four years, beginning in Toronto in 2005 followed by Seoul in 2009. At WSD2013 the World Congress will welcome bids from across the world to host WSD2017.
Who will host it?
The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) is located in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, just two hours from London by train. Cardiff is Europe's youngest capital city and has a population of just over 300,000. It is one of the most popular student destinations in the UK and each year more than 5,000 students from outside the UK choose to study here. Whilst offering everything you would expect from a thriving, cosmopolitan city, Cardiff is relatively compact and easy to get around on foot. The RWCMD completed in 2012 a building development that has provided Cardiff with a landmark building and state of the art performance and exhibition venues.

What happens at WSD2013?
World Stage Design is made up of 3 key components
Exhibition
The exhibition will feature the very best of performance design from across the world. Selected by a panel of international curators, it will be an exhibition of international performance design that expands the theatrical stage from the world of opera, drama and dance into public events and performance art installations in non-theatre spaces, as well as interactive displays and presentations. Exhibitors will be encouraged to explore a breadth of possible presentation modes. The exhibition will be open to the public for the duration of the event. All the work entered will be judged by an panel chosen from amongst the range of internationally distinguished presenters and keynote speakers taking part in the event.
Scenofest
A major part of World Stage Design will be the Scenofest. Scenofest was established by OISTAT and developed in partnership with the Prague Quadrennial to coincide with their major presentation of international contemporary scenography – Scenofest as an educational project includes design for stage, costume, lighting, sound, theatre architecture, technical theatre and other elements of performance design. Scenofest was aimed at students and emerging artists. Following its continued success as a part of the Prague Quadrennial, its inclusion in World Stage Design 2013 will bring a wealth of opportunities for emerging artists to participate in lectures, workshops and performances with two distinct strands; one designed specifically for professionals and emerging artists and another for student attendees.
OISTAT World Congress and Commission Meetings
Throughout WSD2013 international colleagues meet at subject focussed commissions and working groups to review and plan global OISTAT activities, including the combined meeting of all OISTAT representatives at the World Congress.
Attendees / Visitor
It is likely to feature over 3000 active participants from across the global industry and several thousand visitors are expected to attend this public exhibition. It is also the ambition to run a wide ranging programme of outreach activity for schools, colleges and university students.
What will it feel like?
WSD 2013 will not only be an exhibition representative of the work of individual designers, but will create a centre of activity, diversity, participation and multicultural exchange. It will provide a platform for exhibitors to reflect on their individual practice in the context of global developments, by meeting and sharing their work, their processes and philosophy. It will also allow a wider audience of students, teachers and public to experience and form a greater understanding of the work of those who create the performance environment.
Who’s backing it?
WSD 2013 has strong expressions of support in an international context from members of OISTAT and within Wales from the performance community. Support in the UK will come from The Society of British Theatre Designers and The Association of Courses in Theatre Design, and in a broader European context with interest in participation from a wealth of European OISTAT members. We are developing a creative team with a proven track record working for the PQ Scenofest 2003, 2007 and 2011; we have confidence that we can build on the success of Toronto 2005 and the work achieved by our fellow OISTAT members in Seoul in 2009.
