Architecture Commission meeting in Belgium and the visiting to major Belgium theatres

Reinhold Daberto
Chair of Architecture Commission

BASTT, Belgium OISTAT Centre invited OISTAT Architecture Commission to Belgium from 08th till 10th of June 2006.

The meeting was intended to stimulate the exchange of opinions between architects and theatre technicians. BASTT with Pieter de Kimpe and with help of Rose Werckx, president of BASTT, organized 3 great days with a lot of different experiences for all the members. The 2006 Meeting was a 3-day round trip through major cities of Belgium: Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent.

In each city Pieter de Kimpe had selected theatres or venues that had a specific character and which answered local needs or conditions.

Theatres and venues visited were:

Antwerp:
•   De Single - International Arts centre and conservatorium
Architect Sephane Beel explained a 10-year process in finding appropriate solution for extension and reorganisation.

Brussels:
•   KVS - Koenigelik Vlamse Shouwbourg - Drama theatre for the Flemish speaking part of Population. An existing theatre in the heart of Brussels was renovated and received a new auditorium with moveable floor areas.
•   Ancienne Belgique is a concert hall, especially for Rock, Pop and Jazz music
•   National Theatre -  Recently new built theatre with 2 auditoriums for the French speaking part of population

Ghent:
•    Handelsbeurs - a building with different former utilizations (e.g. postage horses changing house, inn, hotel or commercial meeting rooms) now converted in a assembling hall with flat floor for banquet and conventions or use as a theatre or concert hall with seating risers bringing the stage level 5 m below in comparison to the one in flat configuration.
•    Vooruit - a reconstructed hall from the beginning of 20th century with 2 halls, as explained by architect Ro Berteloot, providing 2 halls one on top of the other with extensive stained glass headlights.
•    The Minard Shouwburg by architect Luc Dhooghe showed an unconventional access to preserve a protected auditorium just by keeping it as it is but providing new scenic possibilities by adding a modern auditorium on the spot where one would expect a backstage.

The tours in 3 cities did not show solutions that might be prototypes for new theatres, but they showed different and specific ways to convert old buildings and adapt them for modern requirements, which is a major task in Europe with its rich heritage.

The exchange of opinions between architects and theatre technicians did not happen so much during the meeting, since a rich program had to be followed, but exchange will continue during the virtual commission meeting via Internet.
