Ellen Stewart was the founder of La Mama, the off-Broadway house that has nurtured some of theater's most important talents. Ms. Stewart's efforts to bring international talent to the La Mama home in Manhattan were extremely valuable. Since 1961, La MaMa provided opportunities for international artists from more than seventy countries to perform in the US and gave the US audiences the possibility to be exposed to international tastes. As an international organization many of OISTAT’s colleagues worldwide were aided by Ms. Stewart and La MaMa.
We express heartfelt condolence over her death.
