In 2010 we met in Beijing, China, by invitation of the Central Academy for Drama China (CADC)   and with support from the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Chinese Centre of OISTAT. This was the first official OISTAT meeting in China. The preparation spanned over two years. OISTAT secretariat and the executive director Wei - Wen Chang provided valuable assistance and advice during the entire process.

The  program of the Beijing meeting included two  business sessions in which we  addressed  organizational issues, membership, planning for the next meetings. Overview reports of on-going OISTAT projects, namely, Scenofest 2011, the new OISTAT website and WSD 2013, DTW,  were presented for discussion by OISTAT Executive Director Wei-Wen Chang,  Scenofest project leader Jessica Bowles and DTW project leader Michael Ramsaur and Marina Raytchinova. (Minutes of the business sessions are attached.)

The International educational symposium, held in conjunction and under the theme

“ Contemporary Design Education - Between National Tradition, Innovation and Globalization ”  featured  the impact of growing internationalism on the contemporary theatre education and practice and the importance of respecting national specifics and traditions. Ten  presenters from China and from OISTAT explored approaches to teaching design and stage technology. The symposium provoked great interest and was attended by over 100 students from CADC. It was also featured  in a special academic publication of CADC.

In addition to the working sessions, the Chinese hosts offered an exciting cultural program: visits to the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, traditional Pecking opera performance and a  wonderful  scenography exhibit of works by students and professors from the Academy. Last, but not least the international delegates enjoyed  opportunities to  meet and talk with Chinese designers  and teachers in an informal professional environment.

The meeting in Beijing was very successful.  Our Chinese colleagues  did not spare enthusiasm and effort to prepare an excellent meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the hosts from the Central Academy for Drama and  in particular to President  Xiu Xiang, Prof. Liu Libin, Prof. Sun Daquing, as well as to Prof. Zhang Kangmei, Ms. Lu Ning and Ms. Ju Ping.
