The activities of OISTAT are coordinated by the Governing Board (GB) and its Executive Committee (EC). The Executive Committee consists of eight elected members including the President, elected at the congress. The Governing Board consists of the EC plus the elected chairs of the commissions.
The EC normally meets twice per year. One of this meetings is normally a Governing Board meeting. This serves to coordinate the activities of the commissions and of the projects of OISTAT.
The day to day administration is carried out by the President, the Secretary and the Treasurer. The effectiveness of the organization also depends on the support from a secretariat.
From 1968 to 1992 the Secretariat was in Prague, financed by the Czechoslovakian Ministry of Culture. From 1993 to 2001 Chris Lievaart as General Secretary organized the practical work of OISTAT which was supported by the Dutch Ministry of Culture. From 2001- 2004 the management was shared among the EC members and Administrative Director Jennifer Walker, financed by the Dutch Ministry of Culture and the member contributions.
In 2006 the Executive Committee and Governing Board are further assisted by a Secretariat in Taiwan, which is financed by the Taiwan CCA. The new Executive Director of OISTAT is Wei-Wen Chang.
In 2011, the Secretarit was officially renamed as the Headquarters.
